Belarus increases capacity on border with Poland

MINSK, 3 January (BelTA) – Belarus' State Border Committee took measures to increase the throughput capacity on the Belarusian-Polish border as the flow of passenger vehicles crossing the border has risen significantly, BelTA learned from the committee.

The number of cars and buses crossing the border increases during national and religious holidays in Belarus and neighboring countries. Bearing this in mind, the State Border Committee takes all possible measures to minimize the time spent on crossing the border.

On 2 January, the flow of cars going to Poland increased. The number of cars exceeded the checkpoints' capacity on the Belarus-Polish section. With the aggregate capacity at 9,100 cars per day, border guards let about 10,250 cars through on 2 January. A half of vehicles going abroad at the Brest and Domachevo checkpoints were the cars of Russian owners going to EU countries for the winter holidays.

To normalize the situation and expedite customs clearance procedures, the number of border guards has been increased at the busiest areas. Experts predict a significant transport flow in the opposite direction after the Orthodox Christmas.

In this regard, the State Border Committee reminds car owners of the option to track the situation at checkpoints online on its website. The section "Queue schedules" provides up-to-date information about the queues at border checkpoints which gives an opportunity to choose an alternative time for a trip abroad. The checkpoints Brest, Kotlovka and Grigorovshchina operate an electronic queue system, which allows booking the time for crossing the border. Belarus' State Border Committee advises to take this information into account and choose routes for going abroad through the least busy checkpoints.
