Belarus in talks over direct flights from America, India to Minsk

MINSK, 14 May (BelTA) – Belarus is in talks with foreign partners over direct flights to Minsk National Airport from South America, North America and India, BelTA learned from Deputy Premier Vladimir Kukharev.

When the second runway became operational, Minsk National Airport got an opportunity to handle all types of aircraft. Therefore, now Minsk can receive nonstop flights from long-haul destinations. “We are in talks with all countries of the world, including North and South America, and India, taking into consideration the distance of a flight and the number of passengers,” the vice premier said.

In his words, it is too early to name the day when Minsk National Airport's first transatlantic flight will take place. Nevertheless, Vladimir Kukharev does not doubt that it will happen. “Taking into consideration our geographic location, this will happen sooner or later,” the vice premier added.

This and other matters will be set out in the new transportation development concept for the period till 2030. At present, the document is in the works. The deputy premier unveiled some of the major provisions of the concept. One of them is development of railway communication amidst transition to electric system and increase in cargo transportation.
