Belarus gearing up for 2022 World Chess Olympiad in Minsk

MINSK, 27 August (BelTA) - On 26 August 2019, Belarus Prime Minister Sergei Rumas signed order No.331p to set up the organizing committee on planning and running the 2022 World Chess Olympiad in Minsk, BelTA learned from the website of the government.

The organizing committee is set to design and adopt a plan on preparing and running the World Chess Olympiad by 1 December 2019. Deputy Prime Minister Igor Petrishenko was appointed chairman of the organizing committee.

If needed, the organizing committee is authorized to engage heads and specialists from the national government bodies and other organizations subordinate to the government, regional executive committees, Minsk City Hall, and other organizations according to the established procedure.

BelTA reported earlier that at the FIDE General Assembly in Batumi in October 2018, Belarus was awarded the right to host the 2022 World Chess Olympiad. Belarus' bid was supported by the majority of the General Assembly participants. Belarus won the right to host the tournament over South Korea and Tunisia.
