Belarus develops talking glucose meter

MINSK, 9 January (BelTA) – Belarus has developed its own talking blood glucose monitoring system, BelTA learned from head for science and technology at Minsk Research Institute of Radiomaterials Timofei Samoilyuk.

“Patients with diabetes need to monitor their blood glucose levels all the time; therefore they use special devices - glucose meters. This talking glucose meter walks you through the application procedure and explains what to do and how. After the procedure is complete, the device voices the results and determines whether the blood glucose level is normal and if not, it informs users what should be done next. Thanks to that, the device is very easy to use. Voice instructions will be particularly helpful for elderly patients and people with poor vision,” Timofei Samoilyuk said.

Development prototypes have already been made. Mass production will be launched this year. Starting from 2020, at least 1,130 such devices will be produced. After that, the production volume will be increased to 2,000 or more items annually. Production of talking glucose meters will be further expanded to meet the demand.

This solution took the third prize in the Best Innovative Project category at the National Contest of Innovative Projects in 2018. This contest is held in Belarus every year. It is arranged by the State Committee on Science and Technology in cooperation with the Education Ministry, National Academy of Sciences, BRSM Youth Union and other interested stakeholders. The contest is designed to encourage and reward innovation, in particular in the business community, and to involve more young people into innovative activities. The contest was held for the ninth time in 2018.
