GRODNO, 27 August (BelTA) - A lot of work has been done recently to improve the customs infrastructure on the western border of Belarus, Andrei Kovalchuk, the head of the Grodno Regional Customs, told BelTA.

After renovations the throughput capacity of the Bruzgi checkpoint, for example, has increased to 5,000 transport vehicles per day. There is also an electronic queue service and a modern logistics center.

“Following the instruction of the country's leadership and the State Customs Committee, the Grodno Regional House has been working to improve the border infrastructure,” Andrei Kovalchuk said. “The Bruzgi checkpoint has been modernized as a customs component of the project to upgrade the M6 motorway. The funds were earmarked, among other things, from the budget of the Union State. We have widened lanes, installed advanced weight measuring and plate reading equipment, and new solutions to clear vehicles without drivers having to leave their cabins. Local-computing networks have been modernized at the Bruzgi and Berestovitsa checkpoints to process information flow more effectively.”

According to the head of the regional customs, an inspection complex is being mounted at the Berestovitsa national customs clearance point. Reconstruction of the national customs clearance point Kamenny Log will be launched in October to double its throughput capacity to 6,000 vehicles per day.

Over the past four years, logistics centers have been set up at the Bruzgi, Berestovitsa, and Kamenny Log checkpoints to provide customs clearance services near the border.

Large-scale upgrade of the Kotlovka and Benyakoni checkpoints on the border with Lithuania is scheduled for 2021-2022.
