Belarus' Constitutional Commission turns down proposal for unicameral parliament

MINSK, 14 May (BelTA) – The Constitutional Commission has not support proposals for unicameral parliament, Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives, member of the Constitutional Commission Valery Mitskevich told the media, BelTA has learned.

"Indeed, there were many proposals to set up a unicameral parliament instead of a two-chamber parliament, to increase the number of MPs to 150,180, 260 and so on. But the country has established certain traditions, mechanisms of interaction between the authorities and including the houses of parliament. Therefore, it has been proposed to continue the positive experience. Our idea is to keep the bicameral parliament" Valery Mitskevich said.

The Constitutional Commission held the fourth meeting on 14 May. The commission considered proposals to amend the constitutional provisions on the functions and powers of the parliament - the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus.

The Constitutional Commission had its first meeting on 31 March. Then it approved the schedule of its meetings, which are to be held twice a month.
