Belarus becomes full member of Metre Convention

MINSK, 27 January (BelTA) – Belarus has become the 62nd full member state of the Metre Convention, BelTA learned from the press service of the State Committee for Standardization.

“Full membership in the Metre Convention offers great opportunities for Belarusian metrology and industry. Being a full member of the convention and an active participant of general conferences on weights and measures, Belarus is able to take part in key comparison tests at the highest level and work in technical committees of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM),” the press service noted.

Full membership will enable Belarus to compare its national standards with the international ones and get them internationally recognized.

“Measurements of quantity and quality of raw materials and products and safety parameters of transport and environment are taken into account in international trade and economic cooperation,” the committee said.

The Metre Convention is an international treaty that was signed by 17 countries in Paris in 1875. Since then, 62 more countries have joined the convention as full members and 40 countries as associates. Belarus was an associate of the Metre Convention since 2003.
