Belarus attends 63rd IAEA General Conference in Vienna

VIENNA, 16 September (BelTA) – The 63rd Annual Regular Session of the IAEA General Conference is being held from 16 to 20 September 2019 at the Vienna International Centre (VIC) in Vienna, Austria. The Belarusian delegation is led by Deputy Energy Minister Mikhail Mikhadyuk, BelTA has learned.

The delegation also comprises representatives of the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry (Gosatomnadzor), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the joint energy and nuclear research institute Sosny of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, and the state enterprise Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant. The Belarusian delegation is set to meet with representatives of the IAEA, Rosatom State Corporation and a number of other organizations.

At the IAEA General Conference session member-states of the IAEA, the organization's Secretariat and partner organizations will present 44 expositions to highlight various aspects of nuclear science and technology. Belarus will also feature its stand to demonstrate the level of the readiness of the national nuclear infrastructure for the country's first nuclear power plant. Stands will be also presented by Canada, Armenia, Brazil, the UK, the United States, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Belgium, China, Pakistan, and Russia.

The participants of the 63rd session of the IAEA General Conference will discuss a wide range of issues, including strengthening the effectiveness of safeguards implementation and making more use of nuclear science and technology for development. Agenda items include the application of IAEA safeguards in the Middle East and in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, as well as issues related to radiation safety and ways of strengthening the Agency's technical cooperation activities.

The program will include numerous themed events and a scientific forum entitled A Decade of Action on Cancer Control and the Way Forward.

Delegates will discuss the IAEA's annual report and financial statements for 2018 and are expected to approve its program and budget for 2020-2021.

The Conference will elect 11 new members to the IAEA's 35-member Board of Governors.

Belarus is among the IAEA's member-states. The country takes an active part in the implementation of IAEA projects. The IAEA works with its member states and multiple partners worldwide to promote the safe, secure and peaceful use of nuclear technologies.
