Ancient Belarusian festival brings together foreign diaspora communities in Moldova

 

MINSK, 18 January (BelTA) – On 17 January, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Belarus to the Republic of Moldova Anatoly Buben along with embassy staff and representatives of the Belarusian diaspora in Moldova, participated in the celebration of the ancient Belarusian holiday of Shchedrets, BelTA learned from the Belarusian diplomatic mission in Moldova.

The celebration was organized by the Belarusian Cultural Center in Moldova and the Council of Belarusian Organizations of Moldova at the House of Nationalities in Chisinau, with support from the Agency for Interethnic Relations of the Republic of Moldova and its Director General Veaceslav Reabcinschii.
In keeping with established tradition, all Belarusian public organizations in Moldova gathered to mark the beginning of the New Year and to perform ancient Belarusian caroling rituals. Shchedrets is a central holiday in the caroling cycle, part of ancient winter traditions, and is especially known for its Shchedrovka ritual, which is a festive practice of visiting homes with songs and wishes for wealth and a bountiful harvest.

During the opening of the festival, Anatoly Buben and Veaceslav Reabcinschii congratulated the attendees on the New Year, wishing the peoples of Belarus, Moldova, and all CIS countries peace, kindness, and prosperity in 2026. The celebration was also attended by representatives of the Armenian, Bulgarian, German, Polish, Russian, and Ukrainian diasporas in Moldova.
