MINSK, 14 December (BelTA) – In The Honest Story project on BelTA’s YouTube channel, refugee from Latvia Roman Samul spoke about his new life in Belarus.
Roman Samul described the period following his relocation as a difficult one: “Like all migrants, we had to go through the legalization process, but my situation was somewhat unique because I was forced to leave Latvia. The wait for my status was filled with anxiety, so I kept wondering, ‘Will I get it or not?’”
After being granted refugee status, Roman Samul said he felt a sense of relief. “I finally realized that I was accepted here, and that everything would be alright.”
His wife Olga joined him afterward. She also received refugee status. “It was no longer safe for her to return,” Roman explained. “She could easily have been used to force me back to Latvia.”
Once settled in Belarus, Roman Samul began working on a farm, and the family purchased a house in a village. With the house came four cats. The couple also has a dog who has lost the use of his legs. “It so happened that I first got a job at a collective farm. After a while, I was offered a position as a freelance journalist with the Belarusian Television and Radio Company (Belteleradiocompany),” said Roman Samul. He runs several YouTube channels: one is focused on politics and the other one is about the life of his family, where he shares not only the details of relocating to Belarus but also offers meaningful insights. “As a public figure, I don’t charge for this. I always try to help people, free of charge. I only ask that they share their own experiences comparing life there and life here,” he emphasized.
