10 dead, 25 injured in bus, truck collision in northern Egypt

CAIRO, 12 July (BelTA - Xinhua) - At least 10 people were killed and 25 wounded on Thursday as a truck collided with a bus on a highway in Matrouh coastal province in northern Egypt, a Health Ministry official told Xinhua.

"Four of the injured people need special care but their conditions are not very serious, while the others are having normal fractures," said Mohsen Taha, Health Ministry's undersecretary in Matrouh.

Matrouh security department is currently investigating the accident that took place on Alexandria-Matrouh highway near Al-Awama town of Dabaa district in the Mediterranean province.

Egypt suffers a high rate of traffic accidents that kill thousands of people every year due to lack of highway monitoring systems, inadequate road maintenance and negligence of traffic rules.

Traffic accidents in Egypt declined by 24.5 percent in 2017 to 11,100 cases compared with 2016, according to a report from the country's Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics released in March, leading to 3,700 death and 14,000 injuries.

Human errors are responsible for about 80 percent of road accidents in the most populous Arab country, while vehicle technical problems and external factors like bad weather and poor road lights come next.
