Victoria Azarenka to take part in exhibition tennis tournament in Charleston

MINSK, 24 June (BelTA) – Belarusian Victoria Azarenka will take part in Credit One Bank Invitational, an exhibition tennis tournament in Charleston, the United States, BelTA has learned.

Victoria Azarenka, currently 58th, has been drawn in Team Kindness captained by No. 13 Madison Keys of the United States. It also includes four more U.S. representatives: Alison Riske (10), Amanda Anisimova (28), Sloan Stephens (37) and Shelby Rogers (113) and also Canadian Leylah Fernandez, (118) and 2016 Olympic singles goal medalist Monica Puig from Puerto Rico.

Team Peace features U.S. tennis players Bethanie Mattek-Sands (359; captain), Sofia Kenin (4), Jennifer Brady (48), Danielle Collins (51), Caroline Dolehide (134), Emma Navarro (497), and als oAustralian Ajla Tomljanovic (56) and Canadian Eugenie Bouchard (332).

In the opening match Sofia Kenin beat Alison Riske 6-1, 6-1 and then Leila Fernandez defeated Emma Navarro 6-4, 6-0.

The format is similar to the men's Laver Cup: on the first two game days (23 and 24 June) the tennis players will bring their teams one point for the victory, then two points on the second day (25 and 26 June), and three points on the final two days (27 and 28 June).

Earlier, the international tennis organizations (ITF, ATP, WTA) canceled all official competitions until August over the pandemic. The women's season is expected to resume on 3 August with a tournament in the Italian Palermo, the men's events are scheduled to restart on 14 August with the competition in Washington, D.C.
