Sabalenka, Azarenka move to Western & Southern Open round of 16

MINSK, 25 August (BelTA) – Two Belarusian tennis players have advanced to the Western & Southern Open round of Last 16 in New York, BelTA has learned.

In the round of Last 32 Aryna Sabalenka, ranked 11th in the world, defeated world number 249 CiCi Bellis of the United States 6-7 (1-7), 6-4, 7-5 in two hours 23 minutes. The Belarusian will next face U.S. world number 83 Jessica Pegula. In the doubles opener Aryna Sabalenka and Elise Mertens of Belgium saw off the American tandem of Bernarda Pera and Ann Li 6-2, 6-4. Sabalenka and Mertens will next face the American-Chilean duo of Alexa Guarachi and Desirae Krawczyk for a spot in the quarterfinal.

Former world number one Victoria Azarenka, currently ranked 59, beat world number 49 Caroline Garcia of France 6-2, 7-6 (10-8) in one hour and 50 minutes. In the opener Victoria Azarenka secured a solid win over Croatia's Donna Vekic (World No.24) 6-2, 6-3. Victoria Azarenka will next face France's world number Alize Cornet. In the doubles round of Last 32 Victoria Azarenka and U.S. Sofia Kenin beat the Latvian-Czech duo of Anastasija Sevastova and Karolina Muchova 6-2, 6-4.
