ITF to complete qualification for Tokyo Olympics after Roland Garros in 2021

MINSK, 11 June (BelTA) – The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has published revised qualification dates for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, BelTA learned from the press service of the National Olympic Committee (NOC).

In July-August 2021, players who have a high world ranking of ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) and WTA (Women's Tennis Association) at the end of the Roland Garros on 7 June 2021 will be able to compete on the courts of the Japanese capital.

The tournament will feature 64 men and women each. One National Olympic Committee will represent no more than four tennis players in singles and doubles.

Six berths will be distributed among the finalists of the Pan American Games, the winners of the Asian and African Games, the best tennis players in Europe and Oceania who have not yet qualified for the Games in Tokyo. One berth is reserved for the hosts of the Games and the winners of the Grand Slam tournaments or the champions of the Rio Olympics.

Tennis players who are not top-ranked (Top 56) have to play for their country in at least two Davis Cup and Fed Cup matches in the current Olympic cycle.

The doubles selection is also based on the world ranking. National Olympic Committees are to confirm the membership by 17 June 2021. The ITF will distribute the remaining seats on 5 July.

The world's 16 best duets will take part in mixed doubles competition.

The most significant results were achieved by Belarusian tennis players at the Olympic Games in London in 2012. Victoria Azarenka won a bronze medal in the singles, and gold in mixed doubles with Max Mirnyi.
