MINSK, 28 February (BelTA) – Belarus' Yauheni Karaliok claimed gold in the Men's Scratch event at the 2020 UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Berlin, BelTA has learned.

The Belarusian clocked 16.59 to finish first. Silver went to Italy's Simone Consonni, with Sebastian Mora Vedri of Spain collecting bronze.

A scratch race is a track cycling race in which all riders start together and the objective is cross the finish line first after a certain number of laps. UCI regulations specify that a scratch race should be held over 15 km for Elite Men and 10 km for Elite Women. A lapped rider must leave the race once they are overtaken by the peloton. If the leader of the race overtakes all other opponents by one lap, the race is considered to be finished, with the leader named the winner, and the two athletes behind the medalists. Medal events in scratch have been held at the World Championships since 2002.

The UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Berlin is underway from 26 February till 1 March and includes 19 medal events: 10 men's and 9 women's events. Competing in the championships are more than 600 athletes from 45 countries.
