MINSK, 31 August (BelTA) – Functions of the head of state with regard to the appointment of judges may be simplified, BelTA learned from Chairman of the Supreme Court Valentin Sukalo.

According to Valentin Sukalo, a total of 1,239 judges work in various Belarusian courts. He believes that the head of state does not have to personally appoint all of them. “The president's functions in this regard can be simplified. As for top-tier courts, the president should appoint those judges. As for judges in oblast courts and district ones, I think they can be appointed by municipal councils of deputies,” Valentin Sukalo said.

The official remarked the Supreme Court also has other proposals regarding the operation of the court system. The proposals can be reflected in the new Constitution but it is too early to reveal them. “We are ready to present them before the head of state or before the constitutional commission,” Valentin Sukalo added.
