PM: No ground for language conflicts in Belarus

MINSK, 21 August (BelTA) – There is no ground for language conflicts in Belarus, Belarusian Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko said in an interview with the ONT TV channel on 20 August, BelTA has learned.

“This is not the first time that an attempt has been made to foment a language conflict. But there is just no ground for it. I will not even talk about the results of the referendum, when a significant part of the population called Russian their native language. I have great respect and even reverence for the Belarusian language. Books in the Belarusian language account for more than a half in my library,” he said.

In his opinion, there is a genuine language equality in Belarus. There are many countries in the world where the population uses different languages. “ Switzerland has four languages. Finland has two national languages: Finnish and Swedish, although Swedes account for about 5% of its population. There are a lot of bilingual countries. Why are some trying to rock this boat?,” he said.
