MINSK, 14 May (BelTA) – More than 50 patients in Belarus have received the convalescent plasma therapy, infectious disease specialist, assistant professor at the Infectious Diseases Faculty of Belarusian State Medical University Dmitry Litvinchuk told the Belarus 1 TV Channel, BelTA has learned.
“According to international studies, the convalescent plasma transfusion has proved efficient, including for patients in a critical condition. This therapy is used in Belarus, too. As far as I know, as of yesterday, more than 50 patients in Belarus received convalescent plasma. This treatment method is showing some good results,” Dmitry Litvinchuk said.
In his words, a number of drugs are used around the world to treat coronavirus patients, including hydroxychloroquine, azithromycin, favipiravir, remdesivir and to a certain extent tocilizumab. “Nevertheless, we should keep in mind that all the medicines we are using are in fact experimental. There is no universal drug,” the doctor said.
A great number of drugs are in the works around the world now. “There are many substances that show efficiency in vitro, but have not reached the stage of clinical trials involving people,” Dmitry Litvinchuk noted.
