MINSK, 11 May (BelTA) - Victory Day is of huge significance for the history of the Belarusian statehood, Director of the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB) Vyacheslav Danilovich said in an interview to the Belarus 1 TV channel, BelTA has learned.
“Victory Day is of great significance for the history of the Belarusian statehood and the Belarusian people. It is a landmark date associated with the freedom of the native land. It is no coincidence that Independence Day of the Republic of Belarus is also associated with the events of the Great Patriotic War: 3 July is the day of liberation of Minsk,” said Vyacheslav Danilovich.
Director of the NASB Institute of History stressed that one should do everything possible to keep the memory of what happened. “Unfortunately, in today's world, attempts to distort and falsify the events of World War II and the Great Patriotic War continue. This is unacceptable for us. We must speak as often and as loudly as possible about the truth of history. It is important to maintain interest in this among the younger generation as well,” he said.
Vyacheslav Danilovich also recalled that the BSSR stood at the origin of the UN in the postwar period. “We are considered one of the founding countries of the organization. This is a significant geopolitical aspect and a very important event in the history of the Belarusian statehood, as the BSSR entered the international arena. It happened because our people showed heroism and selflessness during the Great Patriotic War,” he said.
