We need a wider discussion about confidence in Belarusian currency

We need to engage in a wider discussion about the growth of confidence in the national currency, Chairman of the Board of the National Bank of Belarus Pavel Kallaur told the media following the meeting with the Belarusian president, BelTA has learned.

“We are deeply convinced that now is the time to engage in a wider and deeper discussion about the confidence in the national currency. We had different periods. Historical memory is certainly still here. But in the past four years, the National Bank and the government have done a great job to ensure the price stability, which helps preserve the purchasing power of the national currency,” he said.

In this context, Pavel Kallaur noted the importance of respect for the national currency to expand the scope of its application. “No foreign currencies should be used in the country. We have our own legal tender, the Belarusian ruble, and it should be used in all settlements. We must move away from these vestiges of the difficult periods,” he stressed.

With regard to the upcoming 25th anniversary of the Belarusian ruble, he said that a number of activities are being planned. Plans are in place to publish more information about the stages in the development of the national currency and the central bank as an institution of the independent state. The head of the National Bank also recalled that updated banknotes of 5 and 10 rubles will put into circulation this year as well as some denominations of coins.

As BelTA reported earlier, the National Bank is developing a strategy to enhance the confidence in the national currency.
