No leader or head of government, or other official representative of the CIS member state has ever expressed concerns regarding the need for the Commonwealth of Independent States, Chairman of the CIS Executive Committee Sergei Lebedev stated as he summarized the results of the CIS Foreign Ministers Council meeting on 16 September.
“All of them understand and support the need to keep and further develop the organization. Yes, there is a necessity to upgrade and adapt it to modern realities. The CIS dissolution has never been on agenda and is out of the question today,” he said. Sergei Lebedev added that he feels optimistic about the future of the organization.
According to the Chairman of the CIS Executive Committee, residents of the CIS countries are connected with each other through “thousands and even millions” of threads, including “historical community” and “family ties”. “A new phenomenon of the present day, the international terrorism, prompts us to strengthen our security,” he said. “That is why, everyone with clear thinking understands the need for the CIS,” Sergei Lebedev stressed.
16 issues on the agenda of the CIS Foreign Ministers Council meeting were approved on 16 September. Ten of them will be submitted for consideration at the forthcoming CIS summit in Bishkek.
