Municipal elections in Belarus are no longer routine, a real fight for power is in progress, BelTA learned from Chairwoman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus Lidia Yermoshina on 18 February.
The head of the Belarusian election organization agency told media that the election campaign was proceeding in a calm manner. According to the official, the candidates are now more actively fighting for the seats on the relevant councils of deputies. More agitation events have been held in comparison with the previous municipal elections. A number of political parties and public associations have been more active during this year's campaign. “We are moving away from routine and relaxed municipal elections towards vigorous ones where a real fight for power is in progress,” noted the CEC head.
Elections to municipal councils of deputies are in progress in Belarus today. All the 5,870 polling stations are operating in a routine manner. They will stay open till 20:00. Over 22,000 people stand as candidates, vying for slightly more than 18,000 seats in the local councils of deputies.
