Kuropaty should become a site of commemoration for all Belarusians, Igor Kotlyarov, Director of the Sociology Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, told BelTA.
Igor Kotlyarov supports the idea of constructing a memorial in Kuropaty where people can commemorate the victims of the repressions of the 1920s-1950s. “Kuropaty should become a memorial that would unite the whole country,” Igor Kotlyarov said.
The director of the Sociology Institute underlined that Kuropaty should never be used for politics. “We do not need to transform this area into a source of discord and political struggle,” Igor Kotlyarov noted.
The discussion is underway in Belarus on the status of Kuropaty, its role in public life and on the lessons to be learned from the tragic past. The creation of a national memorial in Kuropaty is under consideration.
