Election monitoring is one of CIS' most viable projects

Election monitoring is one of the most viable projects of the Commonwealth of Independent States. Chairwoman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus Lidia Yermoshina made the statement during the international science and practice conference held on 29 September on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the CIS establishment, the press service of the CIS Executive Committee told BelTA.

In particular, Lidia Yermoshina informed participants of the conference about interaction of the CIS states in election organization. The head of the Belarusian election organization agency noted that election monitoring is one of the most viable projects of the Commonwealth of Independent States. The representative observer missions, the quality analysis of election laws, and the huge experience inspire growing respect for CIS election monitoring missions and make other election observation missions take CIS conclusions into account. According to the CEC head, CIS member states should work harder to help the missions, should put more efforts into raising the awareness of their nations about the work the missions do in observation countries.

In turn, Chairman of the CIS Interstate Statistics Committee Vladimir Sokolin informed about the most important directions of statistics development. According to the source, the CIS council of heads of statistics services helps the national statistics services in line with international standards. In 2012 the CIS Interstate Statistics Committee teamed up with the World Bank to set up a $15 million fund. The fund allocated $3 million to the national statistics services of Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan each. The official also welcomed the decision to arrange a CIS population census of the 2020 round.

Lyudmila Kamenkova, Presiding Judge of the CIS Economic Court, informed those present about the court's contribution to the development of the legal vector of the Commonwealth of Independent States. She is convinced that an international organization is respected if it has a full-value court. Lyudmila Kamenkova praised the decision made in Bishkek in favor of bolstering the court's role and effectiveness. In her opinion, it is important to preserve an international legal mechanism to resolve disputes in order to keep the Commonwealth of Independent States operating effectively.

Other reports touched upon prospects of the CIS commission on peaceful uses of nuclear energy, upon personnel training for an innovative economy, and upon the formation of common legal space in the Commonwealth of Independent States.

About 250 people from all the CIS states took part in the conference. Over 100 reports covering the entire spectrum of the integration association's work were presented during the conference.
