Belarusian mass media could use more national content

It is necessary to expand the Belarusian media field with national content. Belarusian Information Minister Lilia Ananich made the statement during the seminar held in Grodno on 5 August to discuss the operation of mass media in Belarus, BelTA has learned.

The official said: “We live in a rather competitive environment where consumers have access to thousands and hundreds of periodicals and TV channels — Belarusian and foreign ones. This is why our mass media should increase the quantity of national content.” She underlined that principles of mass media convergence are already used in today's work.

“Consumers are no longer strongly interested in just the TV picture, a website, or a printed newspaper. In order to stay competitive, dominate the information field of the country, it is necessary to grow dynamically and actively just like in any other industry,” noted Lilia Ananich. In her words, over 60% of the country's population prefer television as the main source of information. This is why TV channels should endeavor to create serious projects such as Belarusian TV series and TV films.

“It is necessary to pay attention to the glorious Belarusian history, to talk about social accomplishments of the state. It is necessary to get the message across to everyone that only we are responsible for ourselves, our families and the country,” noted Lilia Ananich. Speaking about the information component, the official underlined that reporters should cover all the processes going on in the country from all angles and thoroughly. “Good news is always in demand. Good news does not mean slick facts but primarily quality materials. Mass media should see everything and help tackle the tasks the country faces,” she noted.

A national seminar was scheduled to take place in Grodno on 5 August to discuss the contribution of mass media to implementing the state policy. Heads and representatives of central government agencies, nationwide and regional mass media took part in the event. During the seminar Lilia Ananich was made familiar with the operation of the media center run by students in the Yanka Kupala State University of Grodno. She also attended the ceremony to start high-definition broadcasting by the Grodno city TV channel Grodno Plus.
