Reducing the import content will help Belarus improve the competitiveness of its agricultural products, Alexander Popkov, the chairman of the permanent commission for regional policy and self-government of the Council of the Republic, told reporters after an on-site session of the commission in Kirovsk District, Mogilev Oblast on 13 June, BelTA learned.
Alexander Popkov stressed that it is important to increase the efficiency of production which can be done by reducing the imports, the senator believes. In agriculture these are, for example, some fertilizers, plant protection agents. “We have the technological capabilities to manufacture them in Belarus. Products must be competitive and in demand in the market. Most importantly, they should bring dividends to the manufacturer,” he said.
Alexander Popkov also drew attention to such an important aspect as the mentality of the personnel. “Any management decision should be economically reasonable,” he added.
Members of the permanent commission and the local authorities discussed the possibilities for further enhancing the role of local authorities in ensuring economic sustainability and innovative development of the agricultural industry. Alexander Popkov noted that the purpose of such on-site sessions is to learn how the laws work and whether there is a need to adjust the current legislation.
