Amendments to Constitution should aim to consolidate society

The work on amendments to the Constitution should be aimed at consolidating the society, head of the constitutional law department at the Belarusian State University, Doctor of Law, Professor Grigory Vasilevich told BelTA.

The expert in constitutional law considers it both timely and necessary to make certain changes to the Constitution. “It would be great if the amendments will strengthen the legislative power,” he said.

Grigory Vasilevich is convinced that there are ways to strengthen the legislative power even before the Constitution is amended. “For example, we can organize open broadcasting of parliamentary sessions as the parliament discusses the most important issues, or strengthen the supervising functions of the parliament and their commissions, provide methodological and organizational assistance to the local councils of deputies,” said Grigory Vasilevich.

He emphasized the absolute importance of the Constitution for the state and society. It is also important how the constitutional norms are implemented in practice. “The Constitution is a set of basic rules for citizens and government which they must follow. However, the text itself does not solve the problems of the society. Everyone must respect the Constitution. It is good when there is an understanding and willingness to promote and embrace the constitutional values,” said Grigory Vasilevich.
