Zapad 2017 army exercise

The Belarusian-Russian strategic army exercise Zapad 2017 is scheduled for 14-20 September. Some 12,700 military personnel will be deployed as part of the exercise, including in Belarus:

about 10,200 troops,

370 armored vehicles, including 140 combat tanks,

150 artillery weapon systems and multiple-launch rocket systems,

over 40 aircraft and helicopters.

Exercise areas:

Lepelsky,

Borisovsky,

Losvido,

Osipovichsky,

Ruzhansky,

Domanovo,

sectors of terrain in Vitebsk Oblast — Dretun and Glubokoye.

Active phase of the exercise:

17 September — Ruzhansky exercise area — Air Force units will deliver an actual air strike;

18 September — Osipovichsky exercise area — an operation will be staged to hold a defensive position;

19 September — Domanovo exercise area — air defense units are put on high alert.

Representatives of the UN, OSCE, NATO, CIS, the Collective Security Treaty Organization, the Red Cross and military observers from Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Ukraine, Estonia, Sweden, and Norway have been invited to watch the exercise.
