Khatyn tragedy anniversary

Khatyn tragedy anniversary

The Belarusian village of Khatyn was burnt down on 22 March 1943. 149 people were burnt or shot along with the village.

How the events unfolded:

A German truck convoy with the police captain, commander of the first company Hans Woellke was ambushed in the morning on 22 March by the partisan unit Mstitel (avenger) not far from the village of Khatyn. Hans Woellke was killed.

In the afternoon punitive troops surrounded the village in order to exercise “the principle of shared collective punishment” for the villagers' possible assistance with the ambush.

In the years of occupation Belarus saw:

over 140 major punitive operations,

over 9,000 populated localities destroyed and burnt,

over 2 million people killed by the invaders.

188 villages could not be revived afterwards.
