Day of Older Persons

Belarus observes Day of Older Persons on 1 October each year*. In December 1990 the United Nations General Assembly voted to establish 1 October as the International Day of Older Persons.

As of early 2018, there were 2,041,100 elderly people in Belarus, or the country's every fifth citizen: 1,447,500 live in urban areas, 593,600 in rural areas.

Out of the total number of older persons there are 1,314,900 women (64.4%) and 726,200 men (35.6%).

The share of people aged 60 years or over among employees stood at 7%*.

Life expectancy of the elderly is 74.4 years (69.3 years for men and 79.2 years for women).

943 women and 1497 men entered into marriage in old age. In 757 cases both spouses were aged 60 and older.

The share of internet users among the elderly is 30.1%.

The most popular uses:

88.8% - search for information

59.9% - social networks, forums

53.2% - emails, chatting

51.3% - movies, music.

* According to the gerontology, people aged 60 and older are considered the elderly.
