Lukashenko: We know how to live and we live in our own land

GOMEL, 21 July (BelTA) – The socially oriented policy, which has been pursued in Belarus for the last few decades, produces results. The most important one of them is the ability to live in one's own land and determine one's own fate independently. Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko made the relevant statement as he met with Gomel Oblast's top officials and executives on 21 July, BelTA has learned.

Aleksandr Lukashenko said: “We've been focusing on developing our own – our own economy, the manufacturing sector. We've given our people opportunities to make money. People don't live wealthy lives. You are not rich either. You are no oligarchs. But we know how to live and we live in our own land.”

“If we didn't pursue such a policy (socially oriented is the scientific term), a people's policy, we wouldn't be in this hall today. Other people would gather up here if they managed to preserve such a cozy hall. We would live in the back of beyond as it had always been. We would wear bark shoes and ride wooden carts. But back then we clenched our teeth, we survived, particularly here, in the Chernobyl-affected land. I wouldn't say they want to replace the government in Belarus today. They want to shake it up,” the head of state noted.
