Lukashenko wants tougher punishment for drunk driving

MINSK, 28 February (BelTA) – Drunk drivers should face a tougher punishment, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko said as he heard out a report of Minister of Internal Affairs Igor Shunevich on 28 February, BelTA has learned.

“You are trying to suggest tougher punishment on the part of the road police. It is the right thing to do: boozers should never be behind the wheel. The punishment should be serious, in particular, when a drunk driver kills someone. There is nothing to debate here,” Alexander Lukashenko emphasized.

Igor Shunevich told reporters that road safety level in Belarus is comparable to Europe's. Speaking about a possibility to toughen punishment for drunk driving, the minister noted: “We believe that our further actions should be based on the analysis of the existing law enforcement practices, including judicial ones.”
