BRAGIN, 26 April (BelTA) – Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko continues his tour around the Belarusian regions affected by the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. On the 35th anniversary of the accident the Belarusian leader is paying a visit to Bragin, Gomel Oblast, BelTA has learned.
The head of state will be briefed on the progress made to landscape the public garden in Bragin. Aleksandr Lukashenko is expected to take part in the ceremony to lay the Alley of Memory and install a memorial sign in memory of the 35th anniversary of the Chernobyl accident.
There will also be a commemorative meeting near the monument to Vasily Ignatenko, a native of Bragin District.
The bust of Vasily Ignatenko and the architectural composition reminding about the displaced villages of the district are located on the central square of Bragin. Vasily Ignatenko is a native of one of such villages - Sperizhye. On the day of the Chernobyl accident 35 years ago he arrived at the station to extinguish the fire at Reactor 4. he was a squad leader of the Pripyat fire department. His team completely extinguished the fire on the roof. In mid-May Vasily Ignatenko died of radiation exposure in Moscow and was buried at Mitinskoe cemetery. Twenty years after the tragedy, in April 2006, he was awarded the Hero of Ukraine title for personal courage and self-sacrifice.
