Lukashenko urges more focus on land reclamation in Gomel Oblast

GOMEL, 21 July (BelTA) – We need to focus more on land reclamation in Gomel Oblast, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he met with top officials and executives of Gomel Oblast on 21 July, BelTA has learned.

The head of state said that on the way to Gomel he saw the shortcomings of land management in terms of reclamation, and said that such areas are many. “They need to be saved in the next year or two," he said. “The government need to consider the issue of land reclamation, especially in Gomel Oblast. These lands need to be saved. By using them you will be able to increase harvest,” the president noted.

The president also suggested making a wider use of modern irrigation technologies in agriculture, which will also help generate a substantial increase in harvest.

Aleksandr Lukashenko stressed that a similar approach is applied in a number of European countries, and watering installations are widely used in agriculture. “The climate has changed dramatically. We can face unfavorable climatic condition and fail to get even the harvest that we have today. This [wider use of watering installations] should be one of the areas of your work,” the Belarusian leader added.
