Lukashenko: There are multiple problems in the Eurasian Economic Union

MINSK, 21 October (BelTA) – The Eurasian Economic Union has been established as an organization but is still plagued with problems that need to be addressed. Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko made the relevant statement in an interview with the Kazakh news agency Khabar, BelTA has learned.

“The organization has been established, the union has been established. Many countries across the globe recognize it and would like to cooperate with it. At the same time there are many problems that should not exist. Particularly those barriers,” the Belarusian leader said.

Aleksandr Lukashenko stressed: “Our companies need to enjoy equal conditions. Stronger countries should not enable the most profitable conditions for its own companies and torpedo shipments, let's say, from Belarus to the Russian market or the Kazakh one or some other markets. Since we are intent on creating a union, we have to move forward.”

The president also described as errors statements that certain integration processes take so much time because the Eurasian Economic Union was established comparatively a short time ago while, for instance, the European Union took decades to evolve. “The European Union is made of different countries. They did not have the experience of living as one country the way the post-Soviet republics had. We used to be one country. We have huge experience, this very foundation. We speak the same language, we have many things in common. We could secure the same accomplishments faster than the European Union did,” the head of state is convinced.

Aleksandr Lukashenko remarked that certainly it is necessary to be mindful of the European Union's mistakes. “One has to learn from someone else's mistakes. We can move forward faster because we have more experience, we lived as part of the Soviet Union. That country had absolutely tight integration. We shouldn't destroy it. We should recreate what has been destroyed. We have yet to work on it. Honestly speaking, we still have a long way to go,” the president concluded.

The questions Aleksandr Lukashenko had to answer in the course of the interview touched upon various aspects of further advancement of Belarus-Kazakhstan relations, problems of interaction within the framework of the Eurasian Economic Union. The head of state was also asked some personal questions.
