Lukashenko speaks on redistribution of powers in Belarus

MINSK, 11 February (BelTA) – The redistribution of powers is already underway in Belarus, however those who will get more power, will also get more responsibility, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he addressed the 6th Belarusian People's Congress in Minsk on 11 February, BelTA has learned.

Dialogue platforms revealed a great public interest in changing the country's political system and amending the Constitution. “However, before the congress starts working out proposals, it is necessary to figure out what is happening to us now, what processes are going on inside the society and how we will react to them,” the president noted.

At the same time, the head of state informed that the redistribution of powers is already taking place. “We have already started redistributing powers between the president and the government, the president and the parliament, governors, local authorities. The whole plan is on the table. After the Belarusian People's Congress is over, this work will gain steam,” the head of state said.

He emphasized that those who have received powers will not only take decisions, but will also hold responsibility for them. People will have to reconcile themselves to the fact that the president will no longer be responsible for everything. “The opinion poll has revealed that people are in favor of transferring powers from the president to other structures. However, people should understand that the president will step in if necessary and if people want it, although this will go beyond the scope of his responsibilities and powers. Thus, we will redistribute powers,” Aleksandr Lukashenko noted.

The head of state commented on the proposal of one of political scientists to name some laws after those who proposed them. The Belarusian leader considers this idea worthy of consideration and appropriate in the context of the redistribution of powers, transition away from collective responsibility. “People should know who are behind these laws,” Aleksandr Lukashenko specified.
