Lukashenko: International security mechanisms are degrading

MINSK, 22 June (BelTA) - Mechanisms for ensuring international security are degrading, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said when speaking at the 5th Belarusian People's Congress, BelTA has learned.

The President noted that the fight of the states for leading positions and control of the raw materials markets has intensified. The geopolitical centers of power strive to expand their strategic zones of influence, thus damaging and blocking the interests of other states, sparking tensions and contributing to the aggravation of interstate conflicts.

“In recent years we have seen the international security mechanisms degrading. Flagrant interference of the power that be has put entire regions on fire. This makes a fertile ground for radical extremism and international terrorism, which are filling the vacuum of power, spreading into quasi-states and starting to dictate their terms to the world

According to Alexander Lukashenko, being in the geographical center of Europe, Belarus cannot remain aloof from these challenges and threats that occur not only somewhere far away but very close to its borders. “Building a peaceful and neighborly policy, opposing the use of force in resolving international problems have allowed us to become the main venue for the negotiations on the settlement of the armed conflict in our sister nation Ukraine,” the head of state noted.

The President also stressed that today the international community considers Belarus as a ‘donor of regional security'. “I am glad that they heard us and understood our sincere wish to help restore peace on the Ukrainian land as soon as possible. We (and I personally) still uphold this position,” he said.
