MINSK, 18 December (BelTA) – We hope that Belarusian athletes will do well at the 2nd European Games, Belarus President and President of the National Olympic Committee Alexander Lukashenko said at a government's session held on 18 December to discuss the development of summer sports in the country, BelTA has learned.
According to the head of state, Belarusian athletes have two important events ahead. These are the 2nd European Games 2019 and the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
“With the support of home crowd, our athletes are simply obliged to perform to the best of their abilities. We expect high results from them at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Belarusians are looking forward to victories! People are tired of waiting for results,” said Alexander Lukashenko.
As for the preparations for the 2nd European Games, the president said that a lot has already been done. Yet, there are still unresolved issues. “We need to streamline the sport infrastructure, take into account everything related to logistics, catering, healthcare and the safety of participants and guests of the games,” the head of state said.
The president instructed to think through every detail, because this major event will have the attention of millions of sports fans and will be used to gauge the country. “Still, sports results are no less important,” he said. Alexander Lukashenko warned that the 2nd European Games will be a big test to the heads of sport federations and coaches.
Speaking about the promotion of sport in the country, the president stressed that it should be become a fashionable and prestigious hobby, since it improves the quality of life, encourage teamwork and leads to success. “If we manage to take our kids and teenagers away from computers and smartphones, we will keep them healthy. Mass media should play a big role in maintaining an interest in a healthy lifestyle,” he said.
However, during the broadcast of sport events, the Belarusian TV viewers often see empty stands, Alexander Lukashenko added. "Where are the organizers of the events? Is it really difficult to invite pensioners, people with disabilities, children, to provide them with free entry. They should be invited, not forced to attend,” the head of state said.
