Lukashenko expects greater support from EU, Russia in reinforcing common border

MINSK, 17 February (BelTA) - Belarus looks forward to greater support and assistance of the European Union in strengthening security on the common border, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he approved the resolution to protect the state border by the border services in 2020, BelTA has learned.

“We need to utilize the interest of the European Union in closer cooperation with Belarus in countering common threats. There are dozens of such common threats facing both Belarus and the European Union. Improving border infrastructure is, of course, not cheap. We look forward to greater support and assistance. By the way, not only on the part of the European Union. We share border with the Russian Federation,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

According to the president, ensuring the transit and tourist attractiveness of Belarus remains an important issue. The country consistently optimizes the visa policy, while keeping the border secure, the head of state said. “Violations should be detected, and even better anticipated and prevented. Every meter of the border must be protected, including with the help of state-of-the-art technical means, and, of course, with the help of locals, as it has always been the case. We need to raise this work to the highest level,” he stressed.
