Lukashenko: Election will be interesting, post-election period even more so

MINSK, 29 June (BelTA) – There are attempts to foment tension in Belarus, therefore the government is taking preemptive measures, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he met with Minsk Oblast officials and top executives in Soligorsk. An excerpt of his speech was broadcast by the Belarus 1 TV Channel, BelTA reports.

“People do not realize that there are consistent attempts to destabilize the situation. “If we had not brought some people down to earth, Soligorsk would also have been running wild today. The process is gaining steam gradually, we know it: they heat up the situation, push it to the extreme, subvert the government and then the government collapses. It would be good if a pro-Belarusian person took office in this case. A maidan revolution means havoc, up to the involvement of another state. Are you sure that it will not happen? I am not. I should think about all possible developments, because I do not know what actions they will take,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

The president noted that he is worried about the country and he is responsible for the calm and peace in the state, therefore preemptive actions are taken.

“Their ideology is to go back to the 1994 Constitution. It is weird: they suggest reforms, changes and then return to the year of 1994 all of a sudden. Maybe, there are people here, in this hall, who remember what we began with. When I delivered a speech at the parliament back then, MPs were lying scattered near the rostrum. There was a fight (no one wanted to do anything, no one did anything) between the new government that was in its nascence and the old parliament. It all affected the public: there were labor protests, food tokens. Do you want to go back to this time? You can do it, but without me. However, do not let others return to the things that we left behind,” the head of state said.

“The election will be very interesting, while the post-election period will be even more interesting. I promise you that,” the Belarusian leader said.
