Lukashenko: Don't try to scare us with sanctions

MINSK, 9 August (BelTA) – There is no need to scare Belarus with sanctions. Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko made the statement while talking to reporters after casting his vote during the presidential election on 9 August, BelTA has learned.

The head of state stressed that the election campaign proceeds in compliance with the legislation. Asked about the organization of rallies by competing presidential candidates, Aleksandr Lukashenko said locations for such events had been chosen in Minsk. Just the way it is done in other countries.

The president pointed out that police and riot police even guarded the last few rallies organized by the presidential candidates. “We were concerned about the people. We even guarded them,” he remarked.

Aleksandr Lukashenko stressed: “There are six sites in Minsk and only one or two sites were closed for other events, another four sites were in reserve. Feel free to go there and rally. But if you rally outside designated places in violation of the law while the law regulates everything, if you impede other people, we will make you responsible. That's all there is to it.”

The president pointed out that all the sites had been booked in advance and the opposition had been given an opportunity to choose on what days the opposition would stage events. “Every day was booked. I've been briefed. I asked the Minsk city administration and they provided the schedule that had been agreed with all the staffs and all the leaders. What questions can there be?” the head of state continued.

The president stressed he had not organized any rallies in Minsk.

“If you want to express your opinion after the election, well, let's see at what sites it can be legally done, then you can go ahead and express your opinion,” Aleksandr Lukashenko stated.

Asked whether Aleksandr Lukashenko is afraid of foreign sanctions after the election, the president stated: “We already know what sanctions are.”

Talking about consequences of the coronavirus for the Belarusian economy, Aleksandr Lukashenko pointed out that a tendency for growth of the Belarusian economy had emerged and the gold and foreign exchange reserves had increased. “This is why there are good trends in favor of our recovering from this crisis,” he remarked.
