Lukashenko: Corruption is rust, humiliation of the person

MINSK, 7 July (BelTA) – Corruption is totally unacceptable. Fight against corruption will continue. Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko made the statement as he met with top officials and executives of the city of Minsk on 7 July, BelTA has learned.

Aleksandr Lukashenko said: “Corruption is the rust that erodes not only the economy but the society, the entire way of life we've created. It is a humiliation of the person. I don't want Belarus to fall into this vortex.”

Aleksandr Lukashenko pointed out that Belarus' efforts to fight corruption and the low level of corruption inside the country in comparison with other countries had been appreciated abroad. “People don't have to pay up to contact some civil servant. If someone wants things to be different, I am not your president then. And you should not vote for me,” he stressed.

“My head is not in the clouds. I understand what is going on in the country. I understand that many are unhappy because a lot of Minsk residents have been imprisoned in the last 3-5 years. But trust me those people are genuine criminals. How can we tolerate it when thieves take money away from kids in schools and kindergartens? When they extort money for themselves?” the head of state pointed out.

Aleksandr Lukashenko also warned those who might be thinking about grabbing some piece of state property in the course of some reforms. The president noted they should not count on it. During the meeting Aleksandr Lukashenko stated that unthinking privatization of industrial giants had not been allowed in Belarus and the government would retain control over them in the future.

The president also mentioned it is important to hear and stay in touch with ordinary people. “We should see people,” he stressed. “We have a lot of problems. The first and foremost one is that the Minsk city administration and the administrations of the city's districts fail to notice real needs of the people. They work for the sake of the process instead of results. There is too much red tape and foot dragging in the resolution of people's problems.”
