Lukashenko comments on calls to hold new election

MINSK, 17 August (BelTA) – Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko commented on the calls to hold a new presidential election in the country as he addressed a rally of his supporters in Minsk on 16 August, BelTA has learned.

“I stand here like before God. The election took place. There cannot be more than 80% of falsifications. This is impossible! We are being offered to hold a new election. If we step into this swamp, we will never get out. They want to destroy us with this, they want to weaken us. Who will hold this election? Who will run?” the president said.

“Let's suppose we agree to hold a new election, but who will work? If we agree to this, we will perish, and this is what those, who are abroad, want,” Aleksandr Lukashenko added.

He noted that the authorities are now being criticized for the harshness of law enforcement and cruelty in the streets. "What was the reason for this cruelty? We, the authorities? We did not need it! We should have stopped them! If we did not, you would not be here. You would slave for them, and they would divide and tear the country apart. It we agree to the new election we will turn the country upside down!” the president said.
