Lukashenko comments on Belarus' COVID-19 response strategy

MINSK, 17 August (BelTA) – Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko commented on the way Belarus had chosen to combat the coronavirus as he addressed a rally of his supporters in Minsk on 16 August, BelTA has learned.

“You asked me to create conditions for our children to get education, for our people to get medical treatment. We provide adequate education and medical treatment today. Our healthcare is not worse than in other countries, as the recent developments showed. Just take an unbiased look at it. We have chosen our own path in the fight against this pandemic. We did not put the country on a lockdown. We did not close plants and factories. People are grateful for this today,” the head of state said.

“Thank you!” the crowd shouted.

“Today they blame for the wrong strategy, for the absence of social distancing requirements. Look at them. Do they [opponents of the current authorities] keep distance at their rallies and in the squares? They do not care about face masks and social distancing. What do they blame me for? For half a year when this horrible decrease was spreading across the globe, I was doing everything possible to keep people safe,” the president said.
