ASHGABAT, 11 October (BelTA) – Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko called to support Ukrainian government at the CIS summit in Ashgabat on 11 October, BelTA has learned.
“The Ukrainian topic has been raised recently. I would like to communicate my position as both the president of Russia and I are deeply concerned about this issue. It is going on near us. Speaking about the new government in Ukraine, I encourage you to support this government. You already see the tendency to bring down, depose this government, but we must realize who will come to power in Ukraine after that,” the Belarusian leader said.
The president does not exclude the following possibility: if the current government is replaced in Ukraine a hotbed of more than just nationalism may emerge there. “Therefore, we must look at what is going on in the post-Soviet space,” he remarked.
Speaking about the CIS, Aleksandr Lukashenko said that Ukraine should not have left the commonwealth. “I was also concerned about this issue and I tried to persuade Poroshenko not to do it, not to leave the CIS: you can skip our summits if you don't like them, because it [the withdrawal from the CIS] is worse, it affects Ukraine badly,” the head of state said.
“I think it would be okay if the current president of Ukraine attended the summit. He is a reasonable and normal person. He could have talked to different presidents, could have met with the Russian president here. He is speaking about this meeting a lot at the moment. There is no need to take wrong steps, especially now. There is no need to be in a hurry,” the Belarusian leader said.More about President
