Lukashenko: Belarus must not become a sanitary zone between East and West

MINSK, 17 August (BelTA) – Belarus must not become a sanitary zone between East and West, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said at a rally in Minsk on 16 August.

The head of state also commented on the idea of forming a solidarity human chain from Vilnius to Kiev of more than 300,000 people. “This ‘chain' is a sanitary zone we destroyed in the mid 1990s. The West hates us for this. We must not become a sanitary zone between East and West,” the Belarusian leader said.

“Instead of sending our servicemen there, the training ranges in the western part of the country in order to show our defense capability, we keep them in the streets and squares to calm them [protesters]. Is this normal?” the head of state wondered.
