Lukashenko: Belarus is ready for cooperation with Poland, will never threaten it

MINSK, 17 November (BelTA) – Belarus is always ready for close relations with Poland, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko told the media on 17 November, BelTA has learned.

“We are always open to Poland. This is one of the closest countries to us. If we have not done something (and we have not done a lot), these questions should be addressing to your politicians, not me,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said to Polish journalists. “If you are ready to have close and friendly relations with us, we are ready for it. We have always been ready for this,” he said.

According to the president, when such relations between the two countries began to develop, Poland started to follow the lead of the European Union and the United States. “You know whose pipe Poland sometimes dances to. This is, however, a strong state which has its stance in the European Union. We appreciate it. If you want to cooperate with us, you are welcome. Just do not ever lie to the Poles that we are developing some kind of an alliance here with Russia to move tanks against you. This will never happen, neither in respect to you nor Ukraine,” the head of state stressed.

Aleksandr Lukashenko added that Belarus and Poland have a basis for cooperation, so the countries should meet each other halfway.

When asked on why he did not go to Warsaw to mark the anniversary of the start of World War Two, the president asked not to look for any conspiracy in it. “You do not blame Trump for not coming, do you? He promised to come and did not do it. I believe that it is not right for the heads of state to gather on such an occasion, pretend something to gain political points. I do not like such events,” the head of state said.

He also believes that Poland was wrong not to invite the Russian leadership to the event. This, according to Aleksandr Lukashenko, was a gross mistake. “Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and other countries played a huge role in the liberation of Poland from the Nazis,” the president stressed.
