Lukashenko backs Serbia's intention to join EU

BELGRADE, 3 December (BelTA) – Belarus respects Serbia's intention to join the European Union, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko told reporters after the talks with Serbia President Aleksandar Vucic in Belgrade on 3 December, BelTA informs.

The head of state spoke in positive terms about the recent signing of a free trade agreement with the Eurasian Economic Union by Serbia and stressed that Belarus is a sincere friend for Serbia in the EAEU.

“At the same time, we respect the intention of your country to join the European Union. We wish your country to travel this path with dignity. We hope that you will get what you want,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

At the end of October Serbia and the EAEU signed a free trade agreement. Representatives of the European Union remarked that this decision of the Serbian side contradicted its intention to join the EU. The Belarusian head of state believes that Serbia will handle such ultimatums. “You are smart and talented people. You will evaluate everything. If you benefit from cooperation with the European Union with the ultimatum, you will cooperate with them. If you benefit from cooperation with the Eurasian Economic Union more, you will cooperate with the EAEU,” the president said and added that Serbia, first of all, needs good relations with neighbors.

He remarked that all countries, including Belarus, Russia, and China, want to develop good relations with the EU. “We understand your situation,” Aleksandr Lukashenko added. The European Union is an important trade partner of Serbia, this market is virtually irreplaceable, the head of state remarked.

“In this turbulent world you should be proactive and fast in looking for ways to survive in the battle of giants. Therefore, we have a normal attitude to the fact that Serbia is now working with the European Union and the Eurasian Economic Union,” the head of state concluded.
