Citizen engagement seen as major driving force for Belarus' development

MINSK, 19 April (BelTA) – Citizen engagement should become a major driving force for the country's development in the coming years, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he delivered his Annual State of the Nation Address on 19 April, BelTA has learned.

“An individual, their engagement and the desire to live a better life should become a major driving force for the country's development in the coming years,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

He suggested involving young people more actively into the governance system of the state. “It is important to timely recognize the most promising people with leadership qualities, those who want to work, whose ideas are in sync with the goals and objectives of the development of the country, who have a sparkle in their eyes. Where there is a hard-working competent manager, there are results,” the president said.

The head of state believes that public organizations, in particular Belaya Rus, should play a bigger role in personnel selection and promotion. “They need to be more proactive and promote young people from among their own ranks, recommend them and help them up career ladders. We have no Communist Party that once supervised these issues. Our local authorities are not very good at this job. This is a serious public problem. For the time being we rely on trade unions, Belaya Rus, youth, women's organizations and veterans organizations. This is the civil society,” the president noted.

Aleksandr Lukashenko stressed the importance of education in personnel development. “The Academy of Public Administration under the aegis of the President of the Republic of Belarus must raise the national managerial elite ready to carry out a socially-oriented economic policy in the interests of the people and the state and equip them with the expertise and knowledge of the older generations,” the head of state said.
