Capital amnesty under consideration in Belarus

MINSK, 1 March (BelTA) – Capital amnesty is under consideration in Belarus. Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko made the statement as he met with representatives of the general public and expert community, Belarusian and foreign mass media on 1 March, BelTA has learned.

Alexander Lukashenko said: “We are looking into the problem. We are going to confer with our entrepreneurs and businessmen. The matter is on my table.”

The head of state explained that the decision will be made judiciously, depending on the potential positive effect. “We should consult with the private sector. We don't want it to be a blank shot. If business circles convince me that it has to be done and will produce the desired effect, we will go for it,” the president noted.

No specific scheme for capital amnesty in Belarus has been considered yet. But if the decision to go ahead with capital amnesty is made, then it will be done on conditions advantageous for the private sector, at least as good as those in Russia. “Most likely it will be done as refund, money legalization. Maybe even without paying any percentage or with paying a symbolic amount,” Alexander Lukashenko said.
